Activity #2

Archaeologists use A Munsell Colour Book to identify and record soil samples. This way a someone in Germany can record a soil sample that someone in, for example Africa, could understand.

Here's you challenge......see how many different soil colours you can find in your backyard! If you can't find enough different types try a local park..with your parents permission! Don't forget to record where you found the sample.

Print the chart below to take with you. You should be able to drag it to your desktop and print it from there.

Good Luck !!

Activity #4

You can read about Rome, which is awesome!!! You can colour a map and label it too. But why not take it one step further and make a 3D version of Ancient Rome?

Use this recipe to make homemade salt dough and study some topographical images to see where the mountains, valleys, plains and water bodies are of the Ancient Roman Empire.

Salt Dough Receipe
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup fine salt
  • ½ to ¾ cup water
  • Spoons or spatulas
  • Measuring cups
  • Mixing container
  • 1 to 2 tbsp wall paper paste (optional)
  • Food coloring or tempera paint (optional)
Mix the firsts two ingredients first then slowly start with just 1/2 cup of water. Don’t add more than. 3/4 of a cup of water! The dough should be firm but flexible :) .

Tip when building your 3D map don’t build it on cardboard! The cardboard will get wet and bend . Plywood is best, but if you want a really nice finished product do what ever you want to do with the wood first. You can sand it, or paint it, whatever you like!

It is going to take 3-6 days for your map to dry, then you can paint it and label the cities and water bodies.

Try looking at this map to see what you want to label or find a map of your own!

Have fun!
